California Anxiety Treatment Information:Mental Health Practitioner Licensing Requirements:Psychologist: In order to become a psychologist in the state of California one must hold a doctoral degree in either psychology or education as well as pass the National Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP) and the California Psychology Supplemental Examination (CPSE).. For licensing purposes in the state of California, it does not matter which field of psychology one has pursued, their license will simply read “psychologist”. The one exception to this rule is the California license for educational psychologist; this license requires a masters degree in educational psychology. Ph.D. Vs. Psy.D.: The Ph.D. (Doctor of Philosophy) is the traditional academic degree of psychologists. It places an equal amount of attention to both research and clinical practice. Before a Ph.D. can be received the student must work on an original area of scientific research and defend their findings in a dissertation. The Psy.D. (Doctor of Psychology) is a newer degree geared primarily to clinical practice with only a limited amount of scientific research conducted. A dissertation is still required but unlike the Ph.D., the Psy.D. dissertation is clinically oriented. Both degrees carry equal weight in clinical practice; however, the Ph.D. is more desired in research and academic practice. Other degrees our practitioners may hold include marriage and family therapy, counseling, psychiatry, social work, and education. Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT): This license requires a masters degree in clinical pyschology as well as a set number of hours in clinical training. Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW): This license requires a masters degree in social work as well as a set number of hours in clinical training.
